Generic FAQs

VHD stands for virtual hard disk, popular file format of Hyper-V hypervisor which is used to store the data over virtual hard disk drive but it is also prone to virus attacks, damaged storage media, hard disk failure, damage of HDD partition and etc. It enables running both 32-bit and 64-bit x86 OS on a single machine and is actually similar to the logical disk in context to booting, adding files and folders, formatting with file systems and etc.

No, the Hyper-V hypervisor already tried to perform an auto-repair if it detects a corruption in VHD file. But, this is not always be possible. VHD file is made up of a hard drive footer that contains the information about the disk, like size and geometry and data blocks. If the disk is dynamic, there is a dynamic virtual hard disk header.

There is a mirror copy of the footer for the dynamic disk at the start of the file. If by somehow, footer get corrupt, then the mirror at the start of the file automatically restored over the footer and used. If the disk is fixed or if the mirror is also corrupted, then no other way exists to perform the repair. The only step possible is to restore a VHD backup. No manual steps are available that can take to solve this type of corruption rather than VHD restore.

If the data block data is corrupt, then run disk repair tool within the virtual machine like chkdsk and try to repair and recover data. The same action you would take if there were problems on the physical machine.

The support of VHD file has been deeply integrated throughout Windows 7. Users can create a system backup of VHD file and also boot from a VHD file. And if you are looking to edit VHD file and make a quick change or pull a file out of the backup, then it can be easily done in Windows 7 and you can easily mount VHD file for Offline modifications in Disk Management.

  • Go to start button and key in diskmgmt.msc and tap Enter
  • Go to menu bar and click on the Action in Disk Management and select Attach VHD
  • Choose the location and check Read-only to prevent writes to the VHD file.
  • Click on OK, the drive will show up in Disk Management with a blue icon. Now you can access the F:\ drive in Explorer
  • And to un-mount the VHD file, return to Disk Management and right click on the left side of the drive listed on the device chart and select Detach VHD.

Steps to create VHD file in Windows

  • Go to Computer Management >> click on Disk Management >> right click on Disk Management
  • Click on Create VHD. This will locate a Window where you can specify the VHD file size, the format and the location
  • Choose VHD and select Fixed Size as a virtual hard disk type which is recommended option. Also ensure to type in a value for the size of the virtual hard disk. You can change it to GB or TB accordingly.
  • You will see another disk in the Disk Management which displays Not Initialized or Unallocated. In the grey section for new virtual disk, right-click and choose Initialize Disk.
  • Now choose the GPT or MBR as the partition style for the selected disk. For the older versions of Windows, choose MBR.
  • Right click on Unallocated >> choose New Simple Volume
  • Click next and select the drive letter to assign the partition
  • Choose the format partition i.e. from NTFS and FAT32
  • Tap on Next and Finish
